First quantum computing experience for students

This summer marked a turning point for Calcul Québec with the launch of its practical quantum computing introduction program, specifically designed for Quebec’s student community.

For several weeks, participants explored the theoretical and practical foundations of quantum computing. Calcul Québec analysts accompanied them at every step, providing personalized scientific and technical support throughout their project.

This training gave them access to high-performance computing clusters, where they were able to test quantum simulators and experiment directly on a real quantum computer.

The initiative concluded with a project presentation, preceded by a visit to the quantum computer, providing a special moment of exchange between the team and the people presenting their projects to highlight the work accomplished.

A few numbers:

  • 10 participants from Quebec’s emerging talent
  • 4 universities represented: Polytechnique Montréal, Concordia, Université Laval and McGill
  • 46,000 tasks submitted on the systems
  • 15,400 seconds of actual computing on quantum processing unit (QPU)
